Tablet Coating and Tablet Lubrication

Both powder dispersion in tablet compression lubrication and tablet coating processes can be significantly enhanced with our pharmaceutical feeders. Recently, our collaboration with several tablet press manufacturers has led to the development of a feeder system that uses a gas injector to deliver various lubricant powders directly onto the pressing tools. The gas flowing through pneumatic conveying lines carries the lubricant to a nozzle, ensuring uniform coating of all surfaces on the tablet press tools that come into contact with the granules.

    • Coperion K-Tron feeders (volumetric and gravimetric types) are used for tablet compression lubrication, ensuring uniform coating of the pressing tools.
    • Coperion K-Tron leverages its patented SFT digital weighing technology to deliver exceptional weighing accuracy, ensuring precise delivery of lubricants or coatings.
    • Coperion K-Tron Pharma feeders are specifically designed for easy cleaning and engineered according to the strictest cGMP design standards.
    • Coperion K-Tron can provide a control system that is fully integrated with tablet presses or coating machines.
    • The minimum flow rate for tablet compression lubrication and coating applications can be as low as 50 grams per hour!
    • Using the Coperion K-Tron tablet lubrication system can reduce overall lubricant consumption and improve tablet quality by minimizing the amount of lubricant needed in the mixture.

  • During the pharmaceutical blending process, lubricants are mixed with excipients and the active pharmaceutical ingredient (API), before being compressed in a tablet press. Lubricants are added to prevent powders from sticking to the tablet press tools. However, there is often a tendency for the mixture to become overly lubricated, leading to particle agglomeration. Applying lubricant directly to the tablet press tools, on the other hand, can significantly reduce adhesion between the punch and die—a method that’s far more precise and easier to control.

  • When using dry powdered wax, sugar, or opaque extenders during the coating process, it can be challenging to ensure these powders are evenly delivered to the coating nozzle. By combining a twin-screw feeder with a Venturi-type gas injection system, you can achieve uniform and precise dispersion of the powder within the airflow. Additionally, incorporating a gravimetric feeder not only offers greater control but also allows for accurate measurement and recording of the exact amount of powder being added.
