Wood-Plastic Composites

Wood-plastic composites may be one of the most dynamic sectors in today’s plastics industry. While the technology isn’t new, there’s growing interest in the innovative design possibilities that this marriage of materials offers. WPC production typically involves using fine wood waste—such as cellulose-based fiber fillers derived from hardwood, softwood, plywood, peanut hulls, bamboo, straw, and more—combined with various plastics (PP, PE, PVC). The resulting powder is then extruded into a dough-like consistency before being shaped into the desired form.

Compared to many other processes, online compounding and extrusion feature short performance timescales, consistent with the mixing time of the extruder. For high formulation quality, the feeding system must achieve and maintain its required blending accuracy within this brief window. Crucially, a feeder’s ability to deliver high accuracy over short intervals depends on the resolution of its weighing device and the responsiveness of its process controller. As the illustration on the right demonstrates, longer performance timescales allow for a given blending accuracy to be attained even with a lower-performance weighing system. However, to achieve the same level of accuracy in the short intervals typical of compounding and extrusion operations, significantly higher weighing precision is essential.

  • For Wood and Other Organics
Our loss-in-weight feeders provide the perfect solution for precise control of feed rates across the entire range of wood and other organic components used in wood/plastic composites. Features include stable, all-digital SFT weighing technology with a resolution of 1:8,000,000 in just 20 milliseconds, large hemispherical feed bowls, extensive agitation options, and a selection of metering screws.
    For Resins, Regrind, and Additives
Our K4G Feeding & Blending System is designed for the online blending of up to six components at low to medium flow rates. It can accommodate various feeders to combine pelletized, granular, powdered, or flaked materials—allowing these ingredients to be blended simultaneously right on the extruder. The K4G systems are available in 1-, 4-, and 6-ingredient configurations, specifically engineered for direct mounting onto the extruder in a highly compact layout. To simplify cleaning or material changes, each K4G feeder easily swings out, providing full, unobstructed access.
For Powders, Flakes, and Non-Free-Flowing Materials
Our standard and Compact Line single- and twin-screw loss-in-weight feeders provide gravimetric control over the flow of even the most challenging bulk solid materials, with dosing rates as low as 100 g/hr.
High-resolution Smart Force Transducer digital weighing technology, combined with the industry’s most advanced loss-in-weight control system, delivers unmatched accuracy—even in the toughest process environments. The standard loss-in-weight feeders boast stable 3-point weighing, while the smaller Compact Line loss-in-weight feeders utilize precision platform-based weighing.
